Kaiwhata Walk

water.jpgclick to enlarge river.jpgclick to enlargeOur Kaiwhata Walk is open all year. You will need tramping (walking - hiking - trekking) boots, day pack, warm and waterproof clothing plus a sleeping bag (duvets optional) – don't forget the water bottle.

In the dry season tramping boots are not essential but your footwear must be sturdy and comfortable.

The Kaiwhata River, from which the walk gets its name, rises in the Stronvar district and flows about 20 kms down through the Kaiwhata Valley to the sea. Originally the Maori name for this area was Kaihoata.

The starting point is in Ngahape Valley at the Bird family home. Few people live in this isolated valley, but there are many birds, (of the feathered variety,) as well as an abundance of native flora and fauna.

Comfortable accommodation is available in both the main homestead and in purpose built cottages. Meals (optional) are in the main homestead. A cottage kitchen and sitting room are also at your disposal.

What others say:

"I was overwhelmed by the glorious tapestry of mature bush side by side with dark pine forest, and the magnificent panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. Like all heavenly views, you have to climb to get there and a reasonable level of fitness is required. Never mind that. Our aching bones were only a faint memory after hot showers, divine food and relaxed country hospitality."

"The perfect combination of some good exercise, gorgeous views and wonderful food and hospitality. All this and close enough to Wellington to be a realistic weekend get away."

"Being a group of women from our late thirties to mid-seventies, Kaiwhata was a walk that was achievable. It was certainly challenging in places but very manageable. We loved the varied scenery - from farmlands, native bush and pine forests. The days were well planned, food was abundantly great and accommodation very comfortable. What more could you ask for?"
