Janet King at her shop in Lansdowne

We’re all familiar with cow’s milk cheese, and most of us have come across goat’s milk varieties at some stage, but what about sheep’s milk? Mt Bruce Havarti, Wairarapa Jack, Blackrock Feta and Dukka are just a few of the numerous varieties produced by Janet and Miles King at Kingsmeade Cheese in Lansdowne, Masterton

For most of the year Kingsmeade is a 2½-person business – Miles is the artisan cheesemaker, runs the farm and looks after the accounts. Janet is involved with the retail side of the business and packages everything by hand.

For those curious about the cheese-making process, farm visits can be arranged throughout the year, although Janet says the best time to stop by is during milking season (September to February). The farm is conveniently located close to the wholesale outlet in Lansdowne. Call ahead to organise a trip.

The shop also sells a large range of other delicatessen such as Kilrae olive oil, etc.

“If you can’t excel with talent – triumph with effort,” is a quote on the wall at the Kingsmeade Cheese Delicatessen and wholesale outlet. Many years down the track, Miles and Janet King seem to be quite competently doing both. Text and image courtesy of [WWW]Wairarapa Times Age.
